About Alter do Chão

Alter do Chão is a municipality in the Portalegre District, in the Portuguese Alentejo Region. The population in 2011 was 6,458, in an area of 506.42 km². The present Mayor is António Raminhos, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 13. The town of Alter do Chão is located in the western part of the district of Portalegre, in the Portuguese Alentejo. It is situated on the right bank of the Rio Alentejo, opposite the mouth of the Rio Mira, opposite the town of Elvas. It is 36 kilometers southwest of Portalegre, the district capital. The municipality includes several small towns and villages, including Alter do Chão, GAVIÃO, Ponte de Sor, Estremoz, Arronches and Monforte. The municipality is crossed by the A12 highway (EspANhola de BraganÇa – Lisbon), which connects it to the rest of Portugal and Europe. Alter do Chão is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled places in Portugal.
